Brief project background/introduction

The journey of Underprivileged Children Education & Housing Project started in 2012 (1/4/2012) with funding support from Cobra and Mongoose Charity (CMC), Australia aiming to provide educational support (primary & secondary education) to impoverished hill tribe children. A total of 7 primary schools were set up at the village level in Thanchi, Ruma, and Lama upazila (sub-district) of Bandarban hill district to provide literacy (primary education) in children from grade/class 1 to 5. On the other hand, the project purchased 5 acres of land in the name of the organization at Charui Para, Balaghata, Bandarban and a boys’ hostel was built on the land in 2012 to provide literacy (secondary education) in youth from grade/class 6 to 10. Prior to construction of the boys’ hostel, Humanitarian Foundation (HF) was running a boys’ and a girls’ hostel in renting houses from 2009 to 2011. Then, the boys’ hostel was moved to the newly built hostel in 2012. The girls’ hostel is still running in renting house. HF & CMC will build a girls’ hostel in the same land as the boys’ hostel in the future (when funds are available). Children who have completed Primary Education Completion Examination (PECE) from the village schools enroll in the hostel for pursuing secondary education in secondary schools in Bandarban main town. A total of 98 students (50 boys; 48 girls) passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from the hostel since the beginning (2009-2025).
